My Biggest Twitter Influencers

Thumb influencer

Recently, Everspark Interactive featured me in a piece entitled “13 Attorneys Who Have Raised the Bar with Social Media.” I received a lot of positive feedback and a significant amount of website traffic from their article. In the spirit of paying it forward, I wanted to create a list of my biggest influencers on Twitter.

Identifying influencers is vital to the success of your social media marketing, specifically on Twitter. Twitter is a conversational platform that enables law firms to interact with other lawyers, law firms, potential clients, the media, and more. While many lawyers using Twitter focus on the number of followers they have, in reality it is more important to talk to the right people, rather than masses of people, and "the right people" includes industry influencers.  But how do you determine if someone is an influencer?

How Do You Know if a User is an Influencer?

  1. Follower count (especially versus following count) – while the number of Twitter followers one has is not something to live or die by, if someone is following hundreds or thousands more users than are following them, be wary
  2. Audience engagement – does the user regular respond with @ messages back to those that interact with them
  3. Klout score – over 500 million social media users are scored by Klout’s algorithm which measures how engaged a user is across all social media channels that he/she connects to their Klout account
  4. Twitter lists – if you look at a Twitter user’s profile, then click lists, then click member of, you will see how many Twitter users value them enough to add them to a targeted list and what type of information they are being listed for
  5. Your target audience follows them
  6. You can take this one step further and visit their blog to see how many people share their content

My Top Fifteen Twitter Influencers

I eliminated media outlets, professional associations, legal vendors, brand accounts, and the like, in favor of focusing on the people that have made Twitter enjoyable, entertaining, and educational for me since I joined in 2009.

No Time For Twitter?

If you are reading this, you are likely a busy lawyer, running a law practice or other legal industry business, or being a superstar paralegal or legal assistant. If you want your existing staff to focus on working up your cases, not learning the increasingly detailed world of social media from scratch, you should contact me for more information about how I can help you create, manage, and monitor your social media channels.
